Abstract

This study evaluated, based on the pattern of Brazilian foreign trade, the characteristics of the foreign trade of Brazil, identifying its major trading partners, including products marketed with these countries and what is the behavior of the terms of trade of the products marketed by Brazil. The study was based on external economic data from the five top countries of Brazilian trade flow between the periods 1999 to 2011. We used the databases of the UN COMTRADE, System Analysis of Foreign Trade Information - ALICE-web and Commercial Radar and the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC). The results revealed that almost half of all the country's external trade is done with the top five countries of Brazil's trade balance, and that only the United States and China account for 28.38% of the entire trade chain in Brazil. The terms of trade index increased following the evolution of the export price index, which rose due to rising commodity prices. The analysis of the terms of trade shows the need for an internal policy that supports technological innovation and productive investment in human capital formation that allows companies greater investment in technology.
