Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study the relationship between self-efficacy, health worker-patient communication and health literacy of patients. The subjects of this research were 39 patients of two hospitals in Semarang, Indonesia. The measurements were self-efficacy scale, worker-patient communication scale, and health literacy scale. The results showed that there were significant correlations between self-efficacy and health literacy of patients (r_(xy)=0.576, p=0.000) and between health worker-patient communication and health literacy of patients (r_(xy) = 0.541, p=0.000). There was also significant correlation between self-efficacy and health worker-patient communication (r_(xx)=0.879, p=0.000). Because there was significant correlation between the independent variables, we reanalyse the data with partial correlations. The results showed that there was no significant correlation between self-efficacy and health literacy of patients when we control health worker-patient communication (r_(x1y-x2)=0.250, p=0.129), there was no significant correlation between health-worker-patient communication and health literacy of patients when we control self-efficacy (r_(x2y-x1)=0.088, p=0.598) either. When we did Regression Analysis, the result showed that self-efficacy together with health worker-patient communication significantly predicted health literacy of patients (R=0.580, F=9.140, p=0.001). It is interesting to discuss the relationship between self-efficacy, health worker-patient communication, and health literacy of patients.
