Abstract

WOLFF, PETER, and WOLFF, ELIZABETH ANN. Correlational Analysis of Motor and Verbal Activity in Young Children. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1972, 43, 1407-1411. Research in the Soviet Union and the United States has investigated the possible function of speech as an organizer for complex motoric activity in the child. The present study, based on teachers' ratings of their 4and 5-year-old students, examined the correspondence between quantity and sophistication of verbal output and the child's production of gross bodily activity and fine manipulative movements. Highly significant correlations were found between quantity of verbal outpttt and quantity of gross activity on the 1 hand and between sophistication of language and incidence of fine manipulative activity on the other. The remaining correlations were relatively low and, with 1 exception, nonsignificant. A functional relationship between the verbal and motoric systems is consistent with, although not implied by, this correlational pattern.
