Abstract
In the acid-base solution material, there are verbal concepts, representations, and the correlation between the two which is known as representational competence. This study aims to correlational analysis between conceptual understanding, chemical representation, and representational competence using the Acid-Base Conceptual Understanding Test Instrument (ABCUTI), Acid-Base Representation Test Instrument (ABRTI), and Acid-Base Representational competence Test Instrument (ABCTI). The research was conducted in XI Science Classes in one of the schools in Banyuwangi with a total of 145 students and used correlational research methods and quantitative descriptive statistics in the form of product-moment correlation, multivariant correlation, and multiple linear regression. The results showed that students understood the concepts verbally and representations on acid-base material, but did not understand the aspects of the representational competence. From the analysis of the correlation between conceptual understanding and chemical representation, it could be seen that there was a correlation with a correlation coefficient of 0,796 (strong correlation) and the correlation between chemical representation and representation competence with a correlation coefficient of 0.851 (very strong correlation). The correlation between conceptual understanding and representation of acid-base chemistry on representation competence had a simultaneous correlation and influence on representation competence and could explain representation competence by 82%. Therefore, students who had a high level of understanding of representation and representation competence indicated that students have been able to understand the existing concepts. Students should also have an understanding of concepts, chemical representations, and balanced representation competencies so that students will not experience difficulties in learning and understanding chemical concepts as a whole.
