Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) in patients with acute atherosclerotic cerebral infarction(AACI).Methods The carotid IMT were measured by ultrasound and the serum ox-LDL levels were detected in 89 patients with AACI and 70 healthy control subjects. Results There were significant correlation of carotid IMT and serum ox-LDL with AACI,the serum levels of ox-LDL in patients with AACI were higher than those in the healthy control subjects ( P < 0.05 ),the serum levels of ox-LDL in patients with increased carotid intima-media thickness and atherosclerotic plaque were higher than those in normal carotid intima-media thickness subjects ( P < 0.05 ),the serum levels of ox-LDL in patients with atherosclerotic plaque were higher than those in increased carotid intima-media thickness (P < O.05 ).Conclusions Ox-LDL may play an important role in the development of acute cerebral infarction (ACI).The concentration of the serum ox-LDL is helpful to estimate the degree of ACI. Key words: Acute cerebral infarction; Carotid intima-media thickness; Oxidized low-density lipoprotein
