Abstract

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are known to exercise an inhibitory effect on crystallization and aggregation of urinary calcium salts which is believed to be blocked by the interference of uric acid (1). Diversity of opinion exists regarding the differences in urinary GAGs excretion and concentration between stone-forming and non-stone-forming subjects. The present study was conducted to determine the differences, if any, in the urinary excretion of GAGs and uric acid in idiopathic calcium-oxalate stone patients and healthy adults in north-western India. Adult male patients (n=43) with calcium-oxalate nephrolithiasis (SF) and 35 healthy male subjects (NSF) in the age range of 20–40 years were selected for the study. Twenty-four-h urine samples were collected and analyzed for GAGs (2) and uric acid.
