Correlation of prevalence and severity of mitral regurgitation and mitral stenosis determined by Doppler echocardiography with physical signs of mitral regurgitation and mitral stenosis in 100 patients aged 62 to 100 years with mitral anular calcium

Abstract

Apical systolic murmurs of mitral regurgitation (MR) were heard in 129 of our 293 unselected elderly patients (44%) with mitral anular calcium (MAC). 1 Apical diastolic murmurs of mitral stenosis (MS) were heard in 28 of our 293 elderly patients (10%) with MAC. 1 We performed a blinded prospective study to determine the prevalence and severity of MR and MS determined by technically adequate pulsed and continuous-wave Doppler recordings in elderly persons with MAC correlated with physical signs of MR and MS.
