Abstract

Background: One of the most important pre-requisites for Breast Conserving Surgery (BCS) is adequacy of margin excision. Different intra-operative margin evaluation tools are being used worldwide to avoid need of secondary surgery, the most common being specimen mammography, MRI, Ultrasound, Frozen section and Touch cytology. At our institute, Intra- operative specimen Mammography (SMG) is used to ascertain the adequacy of margin resection. This study has been designed to determine the effectiveness of SMG in achieving clear resection margins in terms of its sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values.
