Abstract
The use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) technology has become synonymous with the practice of architecture. The attainment of CAD proficiency is therefore critical for any architecture graduate in employment and professional practice. Consequently, the study sought to examine the inclusion of Computer Aided Design content in curriculum of architecture departments in Nigerian universities and its effect on attainment of proficiency in this important skill area. Survey design method of research design was employed. It was focused on Nigeria Universities Commission accredited departments of architecture in universities in southeast Nigeria. Primary data were obtained from sources within the study area using questionnaires and personal interviews. A multi-stage stratified random sampling method was adopted. The first stage involved stratification of the departments by ownership/funding type, following which random sampling by balloting was carried out. At the second stage, the numbers of staff and students for each sampled department were obtained and sampling size formulae applied to obtain respondents’ number. For data analysis, the Spearman Rho analysis tool for ordinal variables was used. The study found that there was positive correlation between extent of use of CAD in design studio/assignments and attained CAD proficiency among students in the study area. The implications of these findings were that for successful implementation leading to attainment of CAD proficiency to occur, regulators must encourage CAD use in other course modules especially design module and that CAD should be made a mandatory medium of communication in design courses.
