Correlation of Bradford Third and Richburg Sands, Pennsylvania and New York

Abstract

The Bradford, Pennsylvania, and the Allegany, New York, oil fields extend approximately 65 miles northeast and southwest. The work included herein comprises somewhat less area, beginning at Knapp Creek, New York, slightly northeast of the center of the Bradford field and continuing to the southern part of the Allegany field, a distance of approximately 40 miles. There has been considerable discussion concerning the stratigraphic relationship of the Bradford Third sand of the Bradford oil field to the Richburg sand of the Allegany field. This study is an attempt, through the use of full-hole electric logs, to show that the Bradford Third sand is the stratigraphic equivalent of that lens or series of lenses known as the Richburg sand. Surface geology is included, in the area described, as a further means of substantiating the correlation of the Bradford Third-Richburg horizon.
