Abstract

Objective To explore the relation between the level of mental health and the coping style of male nurses in the department of psychiatric.Methods One hundred male nurses in one grade 3 and first-class psychiatric hospital in Beijing were surveyed by symptom checklist-90 (SCL-90) and simplified coping style questionnaire (SCSQ),and the correlation between the level of mental health and the coping ways was analyzed.Results One hundred questionnaires were issued and 95 questionnaires were responsive with an effective response rate of 95%.The psychiatric male nurses' overall scores of SCL-90 was (156.06 ± 58.72),among them,the somatization was (1.66 ± 0.71),the depression was (1.70 ± 0.78),the anxiety was (1.56 ± 0.71),the hostility was (1.76 ± 0.79),the phobia factor was (1.54 ± 0.51),and which were significantly higher than (129.96 ±38.76),(1.38 ±0.49),(1.51 ±0.60),(1.41 ±0.44),(1.48±0.56),(1.23 ± 0.37) in the norm group,and the differences were statistically significant (t =4.330,3.865,2.435,2.662,3.514,5.920,respectively; P < 0.01).The score of negative coping style in the male nurses was (10.36 ± 3.87),and was lower than (30.26 ± 8.70) in the whole male nurses,and the difference was statistically significant (t =-50.16,P < 0.01).By correlation analysis,we testified that all factors of SCL-90 had significant positive relationships with negative coping style (P < 0.05) and had negative relationship with positive coping style (P < 0.05).Conclusions The male nurses' coping style was significantly correlated with their mental health status.Nursing management should pay more attention to mental health of nurses,guide the nurse to adopt positive coping style to reduce occupation pressure,and thereby improve the level of mental health.
