Abstract

THE well known spontaneous and rapid decrease in the formation of excess porphyrin in several experimental porphyrias after cessation of administration of the toxic agent seemed to us to provide a particularly interesting possibility to assess the role of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in the quantitative regulation of the biosynthesis of porphyrins. We have observed in a long series of experiments this role of ATP in vitro as well as in vivo1.
