Abstract

In the present study, the correlation between the ultimate tensile strength, elastic modulus and macrohardness (HRB) in SiCp/Al composites has been investigated. The results indicate that the macrohardness test can be used to estimate qualitatively the ultimate tensile strength and elastic modulus of composites with different volume fractions of SiCp, as their correlation is approximately linear. However, the correlation between the ultimate tensile strength, elastic modulus and macrohardness of composites with different sizes of SiCp is complex, and as a consequence, the macrohardness test can slightly underestimate the elastic modulus and significantly overestimate the tensile strength.
