Abstract

Objective To investigate Correlation between parents′ perception of uncertainty and parenting self-efficacy among mothers with hospitalized preterm infants. Methods Totally 160 mothers with hospitalized preterm infants were investigated using the Chinese version of Parents′ Perception of Uncertainty Scale (PPUS) and the Chinese version of Parenting Sense of Competence Scale (C-PSOC). Results The total score of uncertainty in illness and parenting self-efficacy were (84.53±12.48) and (31.17±0.54) respectively, with the total score of uncertainty in illness negative correlation to parenting self-efficacy (r=-0.410, P<0.01). Conclusions Uncertainty in illness among mothers with hospitalized preterm infants was closely related to parenting self-efficacy. Therefore, nursing staff should assess the situation of hospitalized premature mothers′ uncertainty in illness, provide information support to reduce their uncertainty, then improve their parenting self-efficacy, promote maternal role adaptation. Key words: Mother; Preterm infant; Uncertainty in illness; Parenting self-efficacy; Correlation
