Abstract
Ir/Al 2O 3 catalysts with metal contents between 4.4 and 31.1% were prepared by impregnation using H 2IrCl 6-xHCl solutions (0.01 N ⩽ × ⩽ 3 N). It was found that the metallic specific surface area increased linearly with increasing Ir concentration and that interstitial sites appeared for metal contents greater than 20%. Low free acid solutions (0.01 N) caused the smallest decrease in total specific surface area and the largest increase in metallic specific surface area with increasing Ir content. The high free acid solutions (3 N) caused an accentuated decrease in total specific surface area and the smallest increase in metallic specific surface area with increasing Ir content. When compared with a 1.0 N free acid solution, both solutions showed a decrease in the percentage of interstitial sites (interstices between the metal atoms).
