Abstract

Objective To describe coping styles of spouses of patients with alcohol dependence and investigate the correlation between coping style and quality of life. Methods Totally 118 spouses of patients with alcohol dependence (outpatient and hospitalized) in a specialized mental hospital were enrolled in this study from June2016 to December 2016. Coping style questionnaire (CSQ) and short-form 36-item questionnaire (SF-36) were used as tools for data collection. Spearman correlation was used as statistical method to analyze the correlation between coping style and quality of life. Solving problem coping style was positively correlated with quality of life (r=0.24, P<0.01) . Self-abuse coping style was negatively correlated with quality of life (r=-0.4, P<0.01) . Fantasy coping style was negatively correlated with total points of quality of life (r=-0.24, P<0.01) . Avoidance coping style was negatively correlated with quality of life (r=-0.28, P<0.01) . Rationalization coping style was negatively correlated with quality of life (r=-0.30, P<0.01) . Conclusions Solving problem coping style has positive effect on the QOL of spouses of patients with alcohol dependence; avoidance, rationalization, self-abuse and fantasy coping style have negative effect on the QOL of spouses of patients with alcohol dependence.
