Correlation between chronic heart failure and hypocalcemia in Southwest China

Abstract

Objective To explore the correlation between chronic heart failure and hypocalcemia. Methods From January 2009 to October 2016, the dates of patients hospitalized with chronic heart failure (CHF) in 12 hospitals of Yunnan Province, Guizhou Province, Sichuan Province and Chongqing City in Southwest China were enrolled. Then the serum calcium and the morbidity of hypocalcemia in different NYHA grades, different LVEF (left ventricular ejection fraction) and different ages were calculated by retrospective analysis, furthermore, the correlation between serum calcium and BNP (brain natriuretic peptide), LVEF, LVEDD (left ventricular end-diastolic dimension) and SCr (serum creatinine) was analyzed. Results (1) The serum calcium in NYHA Ⅱ group was significantly higher than that of grade Ⅲ and grade Ⅳ groups (P 0.05). The morbidity of hypocalcemia in grade Ⅱgroup, Ⅲ group and Ⅳ group was 46.4%, 55.0% and 55.1%, respectively. The morbidity of hypocalcemia in grade Ⅱ group was significantly lower than that in grade Ⅲ and Ⅳ group (P 0.05). The serum calcium and the morbidity of hypocalcemia in HFrEF (heart failure with reduced ejection fraction) group, HFmrEF (heart failure with mid-range ejection fraction) group and HFpEF (heart failure with preserved ejection fraction) group had no statistical significance (P>0.05). The morbidity of hypocalcemia in youth group, middle-aged group, young elderly group and elderly group was 54.8%,50.2%,50.9%,60.3%, respectively. The morbidity of hypocalcemia in elderly group was significantly higher than that in the middle-aged group and the young elderly group (P 0.05).The serum calcium was negatively related to BNP and SCr (P 0.05). Conclusions The serum calcium and the morbidity of hypocalcemia in CHF were related to NYHA functional grade. the morbidity of hypocalcemia occurred probably in the elderly.
