Abstract
Although China has long used capital punishment, there is a lack of research on the views of Chinese people about it. Using survey data from 524 college students at a Chinese university, this study examined their support for the death penalty and correlates of the support. The study revealed that the surveyed college students had a strong support for capital punishment. Students who held the deterrence and retribution perspectives were more likely to support capital punishment than those who did not, whereas students who held the rehabilitation perspective were more likely to oppose capital punishment than students who did not. The variable incapacitation was not related to the support for capital punishment.
