Abstract
Abstract This was an investigation of the relationships of metaphoric comprehension with divergent thinking, IQ, fantasy predisposition, and imaginativeness in symbolic play in 59 preschool children (mean age = 56.7 months). The results suggest that the metaphoric comprehension of preschool children is more highly related to IQ or convergent thinking (r = .61, p < .0001) than to divergent reasoning. Although metaphoric comprehension was related to fantasy predisposition, this relationship was not significant when IQ was partialled out. Metaphoric comprehension was related to popular ideational fluency scores but not to original scores or imaginative play scores.
