Abstract

Research has found that prophylactic penicillin therapy greatly reduces the incidence of bacterial infections in children with sickle cell disease (SCD). This study describes the prevalence and assesses correlates of adherence to this medication. Thirty caregivers of children with SCD participated in this study. Adherence was obtained through caregiver reports, provider estimates, and pharmacy records. Results indicated problematic adherence, with only one third of children receiving appropriate medication according to pharmacy records. Adherence to prophylactic penicillin continues to be inadequate, with the caregivers' beliefs, reported barriers, and personal experience with SCD related to their adherence to the medication regimen.
