Abstract

Gamma irradiation was used for the crosslinking 2% poly(hydroxybutyrate) with poly(butylene succinate), zinc oxide nanoparticles and glass wool prior to being foamed with carbon dioxide. It was found that 20 kGy was the optimum dose for attaining the finally crosslinking and the accepted physical properties. Characterizations of the milled composite (porous resin) were carried out using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, while the ion exchange capacity has evaluated. Some physical properties of the prepared resin such as water uptake, AC electrical conductivity, and their porosity were studied by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, and BET method which put spot of light on pollutants sorption. Characterization of the groundwater before and after treatment was performed based on turbidity, odor, water conductivity, total dissolved solids, and some essential ions such as sodium, potassium calcium chloride, and nitrate. The pH, rotavirus, and bacterial counting were also determined at initial 3.4 mg/L dissolved oxygen. Some parameters were discussed such as resin/water’s contact time, and their temperature. The porous resin (PHBBS-Pr) was successfully recommended to purify the groundwater for drinking water in comparison with commercial one (Purolite C115 E).
