Abstract

During the fall meeting of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Chicago, R. Brent Butcher and Mack L. Cheney, New Orleans, presented their approach to the drooping lip in patients with chronic facial paralysis. Particular emphasis was placed on static fascial slings and Z-plasties at the corner of the mouth. These techniques were used in elderly patients with chronic paralysis who had drooling and lip biting, and were not candidates for a dynamic procedure. Irradiated banked fascia lata strips were utilized to over correct the lip and nasolabial areas by suspension from the temporalis muscle or zygomatic arch. It was the finding of the authors that both lip drooling and nasal valve collapse were improved with these techniques.
