Abstract

When measuring absolutely and with the highest possible efficiency the 4 π emission of fast neutrons from nuclear reactions of the light nuclei, it is useful to employ a central D 2O moderator, since this helps to make the required neutron detection system relatively compact. As a function of initial neutron energy E n we calculate here ϵ, the enhancement of neutrons leaving the D 2O moderator due to the reaction D(n,2n). This enhancement ϵ is of order 15% for E n = 15 MeV. In addition, the integrated enhancement for characteristic polychromatic neutron spectra is demonstrated by sample calculations.
