Abstract
The title of Larry Thompson's book is as misleading as the headlines announcing new genetic discoveries: both promise more than the research portends.<i>Correcting the Code</i>is a fascinating account of the history of gene therapy going back to the classic experiment of Avery, McCarty, and MacCleod. With their demonstration that DNA from one strain of bacteria could transform the polysaccharide capsule of others, these scientists not only showed DNA to be the genetic material but became the first gene therapists.
