ideas highlighted in the article by Jennifer Fox (‘The Story of Mary and the Angel’ Five to Eleven, December 2002) to one of my lessons shortly before the Christmas break. The kinaesthetic nature of the model making session afforded the children the opportunity to become involved in something that they really enjoyed. And in keeping with the theme of the rest of the lesson they were given an opportunity to really express their individuality. I used this creative session in the middle of the lesson to break the discussion sessions, as the students do tend to get a little fidgety if they have to sit still for too long. I introduced the story to them at the outset, before sitting with I read with great interest your article on dyslexia (‘After dyslexia assessment’ Five to Eleven, December 2002). Teaching children with dyslexia is often a very challenging aspect of a teachers’ role, especially if that teacher is newly qualified like myself. I felt that the article really communicated the importance of the sensitive approach that needs to be taken when teaching dyslexic students. What I found particularly commendable was the extremely user-friendly format in which the article was written.
