Abstract

The exploration of corporatism at the European Community level has been strangely neglected, despite the fact that the Commission of the European Economic Community (EEC) has encouraged the development of interest organisations at European level and attempted to foster a ‘social partnership’ with representatives of labour and capital. This chapter attempts to fill this gap in the literature. Its principal objective is to establish whether or not there is any evidence of corporatist structures and/or corporatist functions in the Community and to examine the direction of trends towards, or away from, corporatism in the Community.1
