Abstract

This entry engages with some of the key ways in which the relations between corporations and local states have been understood by economic and political geographers. We trace the emergence of research on the corporations–local states nexus in relation to debates on local economic development. We explore how these concerns have developed to cover a broader range of state practices, corporate strategies, and forms of social and political mobilization and struggles. The entry focuses in turn on the relations between corporations, local state strategies, and subnational economic development in the Global North; work on the intersections between labor, corporations, and local state practices in the Global South; and debates on social movements, resistance, and corporations which can link contexts in the Global North and South.
