Abstract

The encyclical Caritas in veritate contains a scant two allusions to corporate social responsibility (CSR). Yet it is full of suggestions and ideas about how Benedict XVI sees CSR, namely as an ethical responsibility (though not every ethics is valid for determining the responsibility) that does not come from abstract principles and is not limited to management techniques; that derives from the goal or purpose of the firm and its role in society; that is based on justice and charity; that is voluntary; that is centred on the human person; that is not to be confused with social action or philanthropy; and that places great demands on the leader who wishes to put it into effect.
