Of course, past courtships between capital and technology have driven economic growth and changed society. After all, venture capitalists and Wall Street bankers helped entrepreneurs launch semiconductors, main frame and personal computers, and biotechnology. But the catalytic change the Internet has ushered in is so extensive that it is really a change in kind rather than one of degree.
