Abstract

This paper examines provides an insightful overview of extractivism in West Africa, specifically examining the dichotomy which is prevalent between the distribution of natural resources wealth in this regions’ countries, the engagement of mining MNCs in Corporate Community Initiatives (CCIs) across mining communities and the role of the government in promoting more sustainable forms of socio-economic development engendered through extractivism. In this regard we propose four propositions postulating deeper insights into the dynamic and complex inter-relationship between CCIs, legitimacy building and extractivism.
