Abstract

This chapter analyzes incidences of corporal punishment to highlight the severity of the problem. In each case, the reasons corporal punishment was administered, by whom, and what injuries were subsequently received are included. Several definitions of corporal punishment are considered. These all include the central idea that corporal punishment is physical harm received as punishment in order to try and change a person’s behavior. Whether corporal punishment is child abuse is discussed, with a cursory look at the definitions of abuse given by some states. This chapter includes examples of where doctors have, on occasion, notified Child Protective Services (CPS), but have been told that the state cannot interfere with school policy. Finally, the doctrine of in loco parentis is considered as it relates to public schools.
