Abstract

This chapter examined the role of information and communication technology (ICT) in food supply chain during the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria. The study employed both primary and secondary data. The primary data was collated using a structured questionnaire that was distributed electronically to respondents across the study area, while the secondary data was obtained from the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), as well as the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), to compare the prices of various staple food during the pandemic and the previous years across the study area. From the findings, food price hike was highest in 2020 and this was attributed to factors such as high transportation cost (53.9%) due to movement restriction, hoarding, scarcity psychology, inaccessibility of raw material and poor agricultural output linked to lack of farm management. This chapter recommends more investment in ICT in general and agricultural ICT solutions geared towards improving agricultural value chain.
