Abstract

Results: European population increased from 1991 by 2,29% to 521,344 million in 2001 but by 4,48–6,71% in Austria (AT), Germany (DE) and Switzerland (CH). Cardiac surgery (CS) volume increased in Europe, AT, DE, CH by 104% to 419533 (805/million population), by 72% to 7036 (860/mill), by 243% to 145127 (1743/mill) and 59% to 8526 (1168/mill) respectively. Coronary artery surgery (CAS) output increased by 107% to 238763 (458/mill), by 85% to 4617 (565/mill), by 165% to 75537 (907/mill) and by 42% to 5173 (864/mill) respectively. CASvolume/center/year changed from 285 in 1991 to 391 in 2001 in Europe, 312->513-AT, 500->933-DE & 433->790-CH. Overall CAS productivity is sustained by increase in octogenarians and in combined procedures (10.3% of CAS in 2001). Acceptance of OPCAB remains low at 6–14% of CAS. 2001average PCI/million was 1108-Europe,1495-AT, 2377-DE & 1616-CH when DACH contributed 19% of European population but 38% of CAS & 38% of PCI. In 2001, coronary stenting was done in 81% of PCI – at 897/million-Europe, 1194/mill (81%)-AT, 1788/mill (76%)-DE & 1329/mill (82%)-CH. CAS:PCI ratio changed from 0,7 in 1991 to 0,42 in 2001 in Europe when CAS: Stenting ratio was 0,51 in Europe & DE but 0,47 in AT. European total coronary revascularization (PCI+CAS) increased from 1991 by 234% to 1559/mill in 2001– in DACH by 261%.
