Abstract

In liquid nitrogen, DC and AC corona discharge phenomena resemble each other. The corona inception voltage is smaller with the point negative than with the point positive, and increases as the gap spacing increases. Negative corona pulses are more frequent but smaller than positive ones. The height and repetition rate of the pulse with the point negative increase as the gap spacing decreases. The corona is accompanied by bubbling similar to a spray jet from the point tip. The bubbling is independent of the polarity of the applied voltage. Buoyancy has little influence on the corona.
