Abstract

The main aim of this paper is to present the lexicographic work of Joan Coromines. The structure of the entries of the DECLC and the author’s ideologies are studied, and his tendency of attributing excessive importance to the “sorotàptic” and “mozaràbic” substrates is criticised. In spite of these weak points, the Diccionari etimològic i complementari de la Llengua Catalana of Coromines is very important for Catalan lexicography. Keywords: Lexicography, etymology, History of the words, FEW, vernacular words, learned words, borrowing, documentary evidence.
