Abstract
Following the submission in January 2005 of The Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape to UNESCO for World Heritage Site status, this paper addresses briefly the contribution which the steam beam engine made to the Industrial Revolution through the development of mining in southwest Britain and elsewhere.
