Abstract

Basic science research on the corneal dystrophies is uncovering information indicating that these disorders may not all be solely corneal abnormalities. The presence of a systemic disorder may help to explain the high incidence of recurrence of certain corneal dystrophies after penetrating keratoplasty. Recent advances in stromal and crystalline corneal dystrophies and posterior polymorphous dystrophy are discussed, along with evaluation of the posterior corneal anatomy with specular microscopy.
