Abstract
16S rDNA analysis revealed that Coriobacterium glomerans is a close phylogenetic neighbor of the genus Atopobium within the radiation of the actinomycetes line of descent where they form one of the deepest branching lineages. The relationship between members of the two genera is supported by the following, previously reported similarities: morphology, Gram-positive staining behaviour, anaerobic growth, production of acetate and L-lactic acid from glucose fermentation, and peptidoglycan of the A4 subgroup. Despite these similarities, Coriobacterium and Atopobium constitute separate genera as justified by significant differences in the primary structure of 16S rDNA and in the G+C content of ribosomal rDNA, as well as in the reported DNA base composition, and in end products from glucose fermentation.
