Abstract
Summary â Corinthium aes was the most precious alloy in antiquity. The anecdote concerning the alloyâs origin played a crucial part in maintaining its fame. This paper collects and interprets the ancient narratives about this story and points out parallels between Naturalis Historiaâs other anecdotes related to the origin of extraordinary materials. The aim of the research is to reconstruct the shaping of this anecdote and the sociohistorical background behind this process.
