Abstract

These are the Proceedings of the Corfu Summer Institute on ElementaryParticle Physics (CORFU2005) (http://corfu2005.physics.uoi.gr),which took place in Corfu, Greece from 4–26 September2005. The Corfu Summer Institute has a very long, interesting andsuccessful history, some elements of which can be found in http://www.corfu-summer-institute.gr.In short, the Corfu Meeting started as a Summer School on Elementary ParticlePhysics (EPP) mostlyfor Greek graduate students in 1982 and has developed into a leadinginternational Summer Institute in the field of EPP, both experimental and theoretical, providing in addition avery rich outreach programme to teachers and school students. TheCORFU2005 Summer Institute on EPP, although based on the generalformat that has been developed and established in the Corfu Meetingsduring previous years, is characterized by the fact that itwas a full realization of a new idea, which started experimentally inthe previous two Corfu Meetings. The successful new ingredient was thatthree European Marie Curie Research Training Networks decided tohold their Workshops in Corfu during September 2005 and they managedto coordinate the educational part of their meetings to a huge SummerSchool called `The 8th Hellenic School on Elementary Particle Physics'(4–11 September). The European Networks which joined forces tomaterialize this project and the corresponding dates of their ownWorkshops are: The Third Generation as a Probe for New Physics: Experimental and Technological Approach (4–11 September) The Quest for Unification Theory Confronts Experiment (11–18 September) Constituents Fundamental Forces and Symmetries of the Universe (20–26 September)To these Workshops has been added a Satellite one called`Noncommutative Geometry in Field and String Theory', and some extraspeakers have been invited to complement the full programme ofCORFU2005, some of whom have integrated into the Workshop's programme. The result was indeed very successful! An impressive aspect is thatthe CORFU2005 had the most massive participation so far attractingaround 350 scientists. Among them around 200 young scientists (100graduate students and 100 post doctoral scientists) and around 150senior scientists. Therefore, among others, CORFU2005 hosted one ofthe largest Summer Schools in our field. Internationally leadingscientists have been gathered in the CORFU2005 in the variousWorkshops and the School and have created a stimulating scientificatmosphere for themselves and for the young scientists. Thecontributions of all speakers can be found in http://corfu2005.physics.uoi.gr.Most of them have contributed to the present proceedings, while thecontributions of the last week can be found in Fortsch. Phys. 54, Issue 5–6 (May 2006). In parallel to the main scientific programme a very interesting, rich and successfuloutreach programme was held in collaboration with the localDepartment of the Greek Physical Society and the Laboratory ofPhysical Science in Corfu (EKFE).The success of the CORFU2005 was the best advertisement concerning thelong standing efforts to establish the `European Institute of Scienceand their Applications', which eventually was founded last spring inCorfu. The new Institute hopes to be the permanent extension ofthe Corfu Summer Institutes on EPP and has an additional aim toupgrade them in the sense that the attracted first class scientistswould produce locally a significant research output. We would like to thank everybody very much who contributed tothe success of CORFU2005. We would like specifically to thank allspeakers and organizers, the conference secretary and the schoolofficer (please consult http://corfu2005.physics.uoi.gr)and the group of graduate students who helped in various ways andcontributed in a very significant manner in the success ofCORFU2005. In addition we would like to thank our sponsors, whosecontribution made possible the CORFU2005: European Research Training Network: The Third Generation as a Probe for New Physics: Experimental and Technological Approach; The Quest for Unification Theory Confronts Experiment; Constituents Fundamental Forces and Symmetries of the Universe Greek Ministry of Education Municipality of Corfu and the Municipal Development Enterprise (ANEDK) Latsis Institution National Technical University and Ionian University CERN DESY Max--Planck--Institute for Physics, Munich Sommerfeld Center for Theoretical Physics National Center of Scientific Research ``Demokritos'' and the Greek Atomic Energy Commission Olympic Airlines The Companies: Educational Tetras, Infoware, Kleos, Terra Kerkyra The telecommunication companies OTE and FORTHNET Konstantinos Anagnostopoulos,Ignatios Antoniadis, George Fanourakis, Alexandros Kehagias, AuroreSavoy-Navarro, Julius Wess and George Zoupanos Editors
