Abstract

The renormalization of the effective interaction between a projectile and valence nucleons of the target due to polarization of the target “core” is calculated using a simple collective model for the core. The core coupling parameters are obtained from the effective charges needed for the observed electromagnetic transition strengths. The model is applied to proton scattering by 18O, 90,92Zr and 208Pb. A large part of the observed cross sections is accounted for by the core polarization alone. For example, the strength required for the phenomenological interaction previously introduced is reduced by about a factor of two. An approximate pseudopotential was also deduced from free nucleon-nucleon scattering by using the impulse approximation, but was found to be too weak even with core-polarization effects.
