Abstract

Since CCR5 is a key co-receptor for HIV entry into cells, replacing an HIV patient's cells with CCR5-deficient cells is thought to protect the new hematopoietic/immune system from infection. In this issue of Cell, Hsuetal. show that transplanting a cord blood graft carrying the CCR5Δ32 mutation led to a durable HIV remission in a patient with HIV and leukemia.
