Abstract

I think of my company as a coral reef. --Suzanne Farrell A company of dancers stuffed with stillness like a coral reef: how is that possible? Maybe through movements so inevitable they aggregate marine walls. I understand a coral reef doesn’t sway— it only dams the ocean and hosts blushing algae. Is a company, then, the idea that makes dancers dance? Are dancers gorgeous parasites that color up a notion? Farrell of the glittered eyelids was hard-headed. When she was young, ballet class had given her a place to go and something to do. Something over nothing. Something over curling up fetal in bed. And such was the rocklike grip of her ontology, the notion fathering her pirouettes impersonating diamonds in Balanchine’s Jewels. And what I’m thinking about today: how to keep the faith when it’s just me alone with neither company nor notion. How to inlay a wall with Brain or Star coral.
