Abstract

Coral reef and other tropical ecosystems together are the most productive and biologically diverse aquatic environments, yet they are also the most sensitive to human activities and ecological disturbance. The sustainability of coral reef and other tropical fisheries is challenged by growing population and poverty. The globalized trade market of fishery products has further created a demand beyond what is locally sustainable. In this article, we briefly introduce the development of fisheries and the ecological changes brought about by the fisheries. There is a need from local and international agencies and management teams to support local fisheries and law enforcement, so that local ecosystem could be preserved and maintained in balance between exploitation and production. We highlight marine protected areas (MPAs) as the possible solution for the global problem of overfishing in coral reef and other tropical ecosystems. Ultimately, a sustainable management of coral reef and other tropical fisheries could be achieved by national and international joint efforts.
