Abstract

Copula variation has been a central topic in variationist sociolinguistics, especially in the debate over the origins of African American Vernacular English. Relevant issues in the analysis of copula variation include determining the variable context, choosing the method of calculation, and determining the linguistic factors conditioning the variation. Particularly important has been the nature of the following grammatical category, which has been used to argue for and against links between African American Vernacular English and creoles, as well as decreolization and second language acquisition.
