Abstract
Paracoenia bisetosa Cresson is an abundant grazer of the filamentous bluegreen algae and bacteria within the alkaline thermal spring of Yellowstone National Park, USA. The larvae are also coprophagous. Feces egested by the brine flies provide a subsidiary source of nutrition. The primary source of nutrition from feces is not bacterial colonizers, but rather the nonmicrofloral component. This component is sufficient alone to support actively growing first instar larvae.
