Abstract

Copper(II) perchlorate, nitrate, acetate, chloride and bromide complexes of salicylal-4-amino antipyrine (SAAP) and 2-hydroxy naphthal-4-amino antipyrine (HNAAP) having the general composition CuLX where L is SAAP or HNAAP and X = ClO 4, NO 3, Ac, Cl or Br have been isolated. The IR spectra reveal that the ligands behave as monovalent terdentates in the complexes. IR spectra also show the presence of coordinated nitrate and ionic perchlorate. Conductance values in nitrobenzene show that all the complexes except the perchlorate complexes are non-electrolytes. However, all the complexes except the acetate complexes show considerable dissociation in a coordinating solvent like methanol. The magnetic moments of the perchlorate complexes show metal-metal interaction whereas all other complexes show normal magnetic behaviour. The electronic spectra of the chloride and the bromide complexes of SAAP indicate a tetrahedral structure for them, while the electronic spectra are in favour of a square or distorted octahedral structure for all the other complexes.
