Abstract

Copper base alloys suitable for constructing MSF distillers include the brasses, the bronzes and the cupro-nickels. Basically the brasses are copper-zinc alloys while the bronzes are copper tin alloys. Confusion in nomenclature arises when the alloys contain both zinc and tin, or when the materials are designated as bronzes just to praise their corrosion properties. The paper will describe in some detail the various alloy compositions, their properties and use. All materials exhibit reasonable corrosion resistance towards seawater at moderate flow rates. Copper nickel alloys were developed to withstand high water velocities. Improvement in the corrosion properties of the cupro-nickels through iron, manganese and chromium additions will be mentioned. All copper base alloys are prone to failure in polluted seawater containing sulphides and ammonia.
