Abstract

SummaryThe adsorption of copper by four alkaline soils of northwest India was investigated using 0.05m CaCI2 as supporting electrolyte. The adsorption data conformed to the competitive Langmuir adsorption equation although there was possibliity of copper hydroxide or carbonate precipitation at higher concentrations of added copper. The adsorption capacities of soils were related to CEC, clay content and CaCO3 equivalent of soil. The free energy changes for adsorption and for interaction were negative and positive respectively.
