Abstract

Copolymers of acrylonitrile with 2-ethylhexyl acrylate have been carried out by an emulsion semi-batch process. They contain a high content of acrylonitrile and they form films at room temperature. The composition of the copolymers and the morphology of the particles have been studied. An increase of the initiator level favours the homogeneous nucleation of particles rich in polyacrylonitrile. The copolymerisation of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate is controlled by diffusion through the water phase by the micelles of the surfactant. Consequences of such variations are also shown in the mean diameter and mean number of particles, in the homogeneity of the film observed by electron microscopy and in the static mechanical properties of the film.
